Hello all. I read somewhere that the old Windows Backup program, while not
installed, remains on the XP CD. However, I cannot recall where it is, nor
can exploring the disk find it.
Anyone know if this is true, and where, exactly, it is and what it's called?
Many thanks!

I'm sorry. I forgot to say I have XP Pro, but it was not installed on my
system, but I have the retail disk. Can I find and install a backup prog on
the XP Pro disk? It is not in ValueAdd/MSFT. There is no backup directory.
Thanks.

NTBackup is installed by default on XP Pro and is located in
Accessories->System Tools->Backup. However it must be installed manually if
you use XP Home. You can find it on the CD in the \VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP
directory

It has several limitations including: it can not open .QIC files created
with earlier versions of Backup found on Windows 9x/Me systems; it can not
split files; it can not backup directly to CD or DVD Writers; the version
that ships with XP Home can not create Automated System Recovery (ASR)

Have you looked here \windows\system32\ntbackup.exe on your system? Perhaps
the shortcut in the Start->Accessories->System Tools folder was accidentally
deleted.

However if it is not installed then extract the file from your CD to the
above location and place a shortcut to it in your Start->Accessories->System
Tools folder

Pop the XP CD into the drive and go to Start ->Run and type (where "x" is
your CD-Rom drive letter)

expand x:\i386\ntbackup.ex_ c:\windows\system32\ntbackup.exe

You might also want to do the same for the Help file as follows

expand x:\i386\ntbackup.hl_ c:\windows\Help\ntbackup.hlp
