I presume you're talking about Exchange server....an offline backup is when
you stop the Exchange services and backup the store files in the file
system. It won't purge committed logs and is a lot less useful for disaster
recovery. Online backups are done using Exchange-aware backup software (such
as NTBackup on the Exchange server itself, or any server running the
Exchange admin tools) and don't require that the services be stopped - they
will purge committed transaction logs as well. Online backups are the
recommended method.
