Hi all,

I'm looking for something to backup all installed fonts on a Win98 system
and later restore them to a WinXP environment. I've snooped arount the
pricelessware pages but found nothing obvious.

TIA

You really don't need software for that. Just copy the fonts that you
want out of the Windows/Fonts directory and save them in a folder. To
resdtore them in XP just open Fonts in the Control Panel, go to
File/Install New Font and browse to the directory wher you have the
fonts saved. XP will not install fonts that are already installed (a
very good thing as Windows 9x system fonts are not Unicode) so expect
to dismiss a lot of notice pop-ups.

I have done this. It is a real pain. You must install each font
separately. If you have lost of fonts, this method takes a long time.

Perhaps I am missing a shortcut..... Please let me know a quicker way of
installing LOTS of fonts that you have already backed up...

I just put a " copy-font.bat " file contening the lonely line :

copy *.ttf c:\windows\fonts\*.ttf

in the folder which contain my .ttf files

And then open the c:\windows\font folder.

I believe the original poster was going to move fonts from Win9x to
WinXP. If they followed your advice and simply copied the fonts into
the Winnt/Fonts directory it would break XP as the system uses Unicode
fonts for many system functions.

Start / System / Control Panel / Fonts / File / Install New Font

When you get the folder with your font files (.ttf) open, make sure
you click the Box on the right which says "Select All" !

Win Xp and Win98 font folders have the same path (c:\windows\fonts) ,
aren't they ?

Right. I use Win2k and WinNT and forgot XP went to a Windows Directory
instead in Winnt. Sorry about that. But the part about just copying
over the fonts still stands, though.

I use this batch file regularly and never had the smallest problem with
it :o)

Best regards
