backup fails

I recently set up automated backups to an external hard drive for Vista Home
Premium. First manual backup worked fine but all subsequent incremental ones
(automated or manual) have failed with "windows error 0x81000001."

There's plenty of room on the drive, it shows up in explorer, and seems to
be working fine.
Any ideas how to resolve and get backups running again?

thanks
Spencer

Spencer, is there more error text than "Windows Error" and the error code?
If so, can you provide it?

Hi Jill-

The complete dialog box text is:

"The backup did not complete successfully.
An error occured. The following information might help you resolve the error:

Windows encountered an internal error. Review your backup and restore
settings. (0x81000001)

Backup time: 4/20/2007 9:46 AM
Backup location: External Backup Drive (G:)"

thanks
Spencer

Since "Complete Backup" is not included in the Premium version - are you are
using a third party backup program? If so - which?

nope, not a third party app.
just the "Backup Status and Configuration" tool in Accessories/System Tools.

Spencer, I'd like to get some additional information from you. Can you send
me the following via email? Just remove "online" from my address. If you
need help with any of these steps, let me know.

1. A description of the problem, including the exact error message and error
code (a screenshot will work)
2. A screenshot of your Disk Management screen showing disks and volumes.
3. Contents of %windir%\logs\windowsbackup\
4. Generate a log file using the instructions below and email it to me:

Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Asr,
create a new key called LogFileSetting

Under LogFileSetting, create a new DWORD value called EnableLogging.
Right-click that value, click Modify, and then enter 00000001 (hexadecimal)
or 1 (decimal)

Under LogFileSetting, create a new String value called LogPathName.
Right-click that value, click Modify, and then enter C:\asr.log.

Next, reproduce the error. You should have a file called asr.log under c:\.
You can delete the registry key when you are done.

I've been having the exact same problem. I have an external Seagate
"FreeAgent" drive. The first full backup worked fine. But the incremental
backups won't work. I get the same error,

"An error occurred. The following information might help you resolve the
error:

Windows encountered an internal error. Review your backup and restore
settings. (0X81000001

Backup time: 6/19/2007 8:49 AM
Backup location: FreeAgent Drive (K:)"

Any advice?
