I have a DDS4 4mm unit with DDS3 12 normal /24 compressed tapes.

I have to back-up 13.5 GB,

I told the back-up application (the one that comes with w2k) to compress
data when it's possible, but windows tells me there's no space when it has
backed up 12 GB.

How can I force the back-up to be compressed???

TIA

By default, unless you're running with the parameter /hc:off , it should use
hardware compression.
Have you tested the compression of the tape drive with the manufacturer's
utilities? Most of them (seagate, HP/quantum, etc) have such tools available
for download.

Make sure that what you're backing up can indeed be compressed - if you're
backing up a bunch of graphics files, zipped files, etc., they cannot be
compressed further.
