What is a good backup application? I want to backup specific files and
directories and then burn the backup archive on dvd using any cdr
application.

Something freeware or low cost would be preferable.

syncback may be the answer for you.

Good luck.

Bob

Synback is great, but it will only back up to CDRs in Universal Disk Format
(UDF), which can be problematic as they sometimes can't be read on other
drives, or even with different versions of the same software (e.g. Easy CD
Creator).

Windows XP reads only certain version of UDF and does not write in that
format; it is not as 'universal' as the name implies. I have lost some
backups between upgrades because of this.

Does anyone know of a backup program which use the XP burning facility and
not UDF?

Well, the XP backup can backup to a file and you can then use XP to write
that file to a CD. I have done this.

There isn't any freeware that will do that directly without using the
UDF disk format. However, there are plenty of programs that will back
up files and directories to the hard drive, which you can then burn to
CD using Nero or whatever. In fact, the latest Nero has a backup
utility which is bit better than the older version.

I use XXCopy http://www.xxcopy.com/index.htm utility to backup all
changed and new files from my various partitions to a backup
partition, then I just use Nero to burn various directories. XXCopy
is a command line extended copy program. Some of its features can be
hard to figure out how to use, but it can select and copy almost
anything. I just put a few calls to it with the appropriate options
in a batch file and run it periodically.

Simple, but effective. I probably could automate that further, using
tools ported from Linux, but so far I haven't found the time.

Maybe j4copy could help you in some way, but it will stop at copying
files to another disk location: you will have to burn the CD afterwards.
