Backup and Restore share points?

Hi,

As far as I know, there's no way to restore share points to a new
server? You can restore data from a backup tape, but not the shares. If
you have 400 home directories, that's a lot of typing!

I'm thinking of writing a script that can backup and restore share
points for Windows servers, using an XML database, however I don't want
to "reinvent the wheel". Are there any free tools out there that can
already do this?
 
I was just curious why you have all those shares. Why not share the folder
above all the user directories?

Hi Scott,

I can't remember the exact reason. I've always done it like that. A guy
who works in the building across the way from me used to do it with one
huge share and it was a constant nightmare. He has now switched to my
way of doing it, and has never looked back, but I can't remember the
exact pros and cons. Something to do with the way NT maps home
directories and roaming profiles - maybe this has all changed in 2000....
 
Well, NT and 2000/XP are worlds apart with home directory mappings.
XP/2000 maps very nicely to the folders under the share point. I understand
why you do that now, thanks for the reply.

Maybe that's the answer then, it was better to use shares under NT, but
is no longer needed? Either way, I'll have just as much work to do
regardless of whether I backup and restore the shares, or remap
everything in AD!

I'd be interested to hear from others about this.
