Hi folks!

I posted this in another group but didn't get any response
so I'll try it here.

I was attempting to backup my registry (initial backup)
when NIS popped up saying MS Visual Studio is attempting
to listen for connections. It was rated as a low risk. My
options were to always allow this connection, always block
this connection, or manually configure internet
connections. Since I have no idea what this is I chose
always block this connection. Then I proceeded with the
backup.

The file attempting to connect was msdtc.exe. The
properties identify this as a MS file called MS
distributed transaction co-ordinater.

Just exactly what is this and what does a backup operation
need with the internet?

Thanks!!!

Thanks for the respone, Wes!

I had Googled the file and found this info but it still
doesn't explain why a backup would need this. (at least in
terms which I can understand)

I'm not on a network or a server!

Just don't understand ????

Thanks for the help, MAP!

I did a search for the file and found info on it but
nothing really explains exactly why or what it's actually
doing. At least in terms that I can understand!

I'm not on a server or a network. I just don't get it!!!

Turn it off.

Do you have IIS?
If not.........
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | OK |
Scroll down to and double click:
Distributed Transaction Coordinator | General tab |
Startup type: Select Disabled | Apply button | Click the Stop button |
When it stops click OK

I have had mine disabled for a long time.
=======

Service Name MSDTC Process Name msdtc.exe
Really serves no purpose for home user systems.
Recommended Setting: Disabled
==================

Distributed Transaction Coordinator
Automatically takes care of transactions that span multiple resources. This
service is required if using Message Queuing. You may also see complaints in
the Event Log if this service is disabled, but I have experienced no side
effects. Microsoft's .NET may require this service in the future.
What other services require Distributed Transaction Coordinator to function
properly:
Message Queuing
Message Queuing Triggers
