Backspace malfunction????

When I highlight text and press backspace in some Office
programs, the text does not get deleted. Also, when I
highlight text and then type new letters or such, the
highlighted text is not replaced by what I am typing. I am
positive I used to be able to do this. This problem arose
about two weeks ago on my computer and a friends at about
the same time. Is this some small time virus or hacker
prank? Does anyone know how to fix it?

Sounds like you are in the "insert" mode rather than the "overtype' mode.
