Hi, I'm looking for a reliable program that will allow me to do a complete
backup of XP Pro such that if my hard drive crashes I can get up and running
with a restore, restoring all the files, registry and hidden files included.
In the old days it was easy to find such a program, but it is more difficult
now to find programs that really do backup everything. If possible I'd like
to find a program that will backup to a free-standing USB hard drive.

Thanks,

Steve

When did Ghost and Drive Image become freeware ?

next week? ;-)

So I'm using True Image in version 5.1 which was published totaly *free*
without any restrictions on a magazin CD here in Germany some few month
ago. And I'm using it nearly every day to make backups of my
E:-partition (all installed programs) and C:-partition (System XP SP1
etc.) expecially when installing/trying new software. My daylies I
backup to my D:-drive and the monthlies I burn on CD(s). I'm realy happy
with the named freeware version of DI. It works very
uncomlicated/straight forward, do backup without leaving Windows (even
the system partition!) and has 3 floppy disks an one CD as startups in
case Windows crashes totally.

I wonder that no freeware-concipited is developed in this important field.

Savepart can be used for this. I don't think it will backup directly to
a USB HDD though.

Might be more work than those other $wares mentioned in this thread,
but this is freeware. ;)

Bootit from Terabyteunlimited is not freeware but is a far simpler
and more reliable option than Norton Ghost.

PowerQuest's DriveImage is more complicated than it needs to be.

Acronis is pricey.

You can use Bootit to copy partitions from a boot floppy (which it
will create) and there is no need to actually install it.

Bootit will mirror your whole partition. If your partition has a lot
of free space then you may prefer to compress it into a "image file"
which you then store on another partition.
