backing up XP Home Edition

What I need to know if there is a way to back up my XP HE
system without using the XP cd (not without a big risk),
XP prof. has a back up command. I want to download an
update from Microsoft and asks to back up system and for
the life of me I can't figure out how to do it. I am new
to XP so any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks,

Run System Restore and make a Restore Point (registry backup) Start->Help
and Restore->Pick a task->System Restore link.

XP Home does not install a Backup program by default. You can manually
install it from the XP CD. The installer is found in the ValueAdd directory.
However this won't help you as the ASR (Automated System Recovery) component
does not work. If you wish to make a full system recovery image you will
need third party software. Several products are widely used for that
purpose. The most popular are Norton Ghost 2003, Powerquest's Drive Image
and BootIt NG from terabytesunlimited

NTBACKUP is part of Windows XP Home and Professional. If it is missing
in your installation and if you got Windows with the computer, the
manufacturer of the hardware may have removed it. If you bought
Windows XP separately you should be able to install NTBACKUP from the
Control Panel > Add and remove Programs > Add/remove Windows
Components.
The Home Edition does not support the ASR backup which will allow you
to restore Windows from plain DOS if the installation is broken.
If you cannot use NTBACKUP you may want to look out for a third-party
backup software.

Baskup your data (My Documents,Photo, PDF ect.) to CD/R or floppy.
And Follow Harry's advice
