Can anyone help me please? I want to backup my system and other data so
that I can recover from any catastrophy that may happen to my hard disk.
I am thinking beyond the normal system restore in XP where I set the
computer back to a previous date. I expected to find a backup program
in Accessories\System tools but it looks as if Windows xp home does not
have that luxury.

Is there any form of backup program or Wizard in Windows xp home? If
not, is there a suitable program available from elsewhere? If not which
system files should I copy to a disc to help me get my computer back in
working order if I have to do a full system restore and what is the best
way of doing this?

I will be very grateful for any suggestions please.
Many thanks

Hi,

There are 3 third party programs that I know of, 2 that I
use and am happy with so far, DriveImage by PowerQuest,
Norton Ghost by Symantec. TrueImage by Acronis is new and
has gotten good reviews. It is up to you to decide whats
best for your situation, check them out and good luck to
you.

Hi Don,

It's not installed by default in WinXP Home, however, for a retail version,
this will help:

HOW TO: Install Backup from the CD-ROM in Windows XP Home [Q302894]

If your system was preinstalled, you may need to contact the system vendor.
Many choose not to include this optional value-add utility.

Many thanks to David and to Rick.

I followed your advice Rick and although my Windows XP home was
pre-installed I did have Ntbackup on the Recovery disks and have loaded
it on to my computer. I gather that backing up manually will be
necessary and it sounds like a pain to recover the backup if this
becomes necessary but at least it will be better than nothing.

Why on earth does Microsoft do things like this and make life
unnecessarily difficult??

Thanks again and best wishes

Don

Hi Don,

Microsoft just provides a basic backup utility, there are much better ones
out there. You, as the end-user, can choose to live with the limitations of
the supplied program or purchase a more comprehensive program. As I already
mentioned, this program is an "extra", meaning it is not a part of the core
system. When something is included free of charge, you get what you pay for.
