after 2 major disk failures, I have invested in a 250 gb external hard drive,
Acronis disk image and a D-link usb 2.0 hub. everything works ok, but it
took 2 hours to backup 6 gb and I suspect from the messages I saw on the way
that my high speed hub is working at slow speed. Am I missing something
here, a procedure or another bit of kit ? Surely I don't need to buy new
"high speed" keyboard/mouse etc ? I have tried to update drivers for the USB
controller via device manager as per windows suggestions, but I am told
everything is the latest ! I suspect there is something else I need to add
to my pc - any help welcomed

Try connecting your PC to the USB drive directly, not through the hub.
Are you sure you have connected the hub to a USB2 port on your computer?
Perhaps you have connected it to a USB1.1 port instead.

not sure if my PC has a usb 2.0 port - it doesn't seem obvious from device
manager. generic usb hubs, usb root hubs and " VIA rev 5 or later USB
universal host controller " are listed and COM 1, COM2 and printer ports. - I
have used "update driver" on all these but I am told I have the latest. If
this means there isn't a usb 2.0 port, is it easy to add a bit of kit myself
or does something need to be fitted inside ?

The device manager shows a USB2 port as "extended".
If your isn't like that, then you should get a PCI card. What you are
probably lacking is hardware support for USB2, and that takes more than
software to enable.

Also, do not connect through a hub.

For interest, it takes my system about 15 minutes to backup over 11GB to a
USB2 drive.

thanks for all this. I had guessed that this was the case but don't know
enough to be sure ! I'll investigate the PCI card asap.
