HOW TO: Use Backup to Back Up Files and Folders on Your Computer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308422

XP's native (standard) CD Recording program does not permit backing up data
directly to a CD. You must create a new folder on your hard drive, perform
a backup to that folder, then record the contents of that folder to a CD.

You can use the Windows backup application to backup to CD as long as you
have packet writing software such as Easy CD Creator's Direct CD or Nero's
InCD installed and the CD to which you are trying to backup has been
formatted for the application you are using.

Really? I've got Easy CD installed, and the CD is a RW formatted to
Packet but the XP Backup doesn't give the option of saving to CD!

If you have the
right version with all the updates, it's possible your burner isn't in the
Easy CD Compatibility list for this particular update.
Could be the answer - my CD RW drive is "supported" by not being in the
"Unsupported" list rather than being in the "supported" list.....If you
see what I mean....
