Hi,

I've just upgraded to Office 2003 and my 2002 version had
a tool called Personal Folders Backup
(http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?
FamilyID=BED9139F-613D-4182-A973-
CD2FA0C691D5&displaylang=en). this was uninstalled
automatically by the upgrade, does anyone know how to
automatically backup the pst with 2003?

Cheers

Gareth

You can still use the backup add-in, but this is what you have to do.

Download the add-ina gian from MS site. Then extract with wioth Winzip to a
folder. There, you will see two files. Start the one with the MSI
extension. Re-install it, then uninstall it, then re-install it.

Nice to hear.

I know this isn't the proper way of doing it but can I suggest a feature?

Since the add-in "only" does a filecopy when Outlook closes it is not a
really a non-intrusive back-up utillity. Also I know a lot of people
(including myself) have their Outlook open 24/7 so there could be days
between back-ups.

Since Windows XP is capable to back-up open files it might be handy if the
add-in could be scheduled to back-up at specific times as well. This way
pst-files will be backed-up regular for the people who have Outlook open
24/7 and the back-up is less intrusive as well (most of the time you close
Outlook when you shutdown your computer and need to go some place else; you
don't want to wait before the copy is done).

For people without Windows XP or for people who have their pst-file on a
networkshare (I know; not recommended by MS) an option to force Outlook to
close, so it can back-up the pst, and then start again when the back-up is
done could be handy as well so that they also can schedule their back-up.

I don't think this is very hard to realize. In fact I created a batch-file
with a vbs-script to do this myself. I've got it on my website
www.sparnaaij.net in the Downloads section.

I really like to hear your thoughts on this.

Our focus for pfbackup.exe was to fix the compatibility
issues between the old pfbackup.exe and Outlook 2003, not
to improve it. Your suggestion will be considered for
future releases.

Not automatically, but how hard is it to shut down Outlook and then copy the
PST file to your backup location?

Thanks for the reply. Of course the compatibility is the main thing I'll
wait and see if my suggestion will be used ;-)

Hi Gareth,
The Outlook 2003 version of Personal Folders Backup is available at the following link.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...3A-B7D0-4B16-B8AF-5A6322F4FD01&displaylang=en

Please install this and that should solve the issue.
I am closing this issue as resolved. If this does not solve the issue, please let me know.
Thanks.
