I just spent 1 1/2 hours reading on this site and various other sites on how
to backup outlook . I'M STILL CONFUSED. When I go to the pst file on the c
drive and try to open it - I get a " file conversion box - outlook pst"
should I be getting something else that I can read.

Close outlook and copy the PST files to the CD (or more likely DVD).

Use http://imgburn.com tool for this. It works painlessly and it's free.

You can then re-open them in the event of a disaster later with File ->
Open -> Outlook Data File among other means.

Thank you for your reply, I already have roxio and know how to copy to a cd,
however when I try to do that and try to open the file on the cd, I get a not
responding message - it won't open. The problem is not in copying to the cd,
but in the file as my original question was leading to. I'm trying to
understand how this all works and what is wrong. I've read 4 or 5 articles on
backing up outlook and it's not making sense to me. Sorry. Is there an easier
way to understand how to do this?

Copy the file from DVD to a location on your C: drive
Open Outlook and create a new profile if necessary
Click File -> Open -> Outlook Data File
Choose your file from the location on C: drive
Your data should now be available

It is imperative that when you copy the PST to the DVD originally that
you exit Outlook completely. Otherwise, a sharing violation error may occur.

I have written a program that extracts contacts and email message and stores them in Microsoft Access database file. You do not have to have Outlook open or know anything about how it works. One button to click. I wrote the program because of problems I have had with Outlook. Free trial at http://www.smallbsystems.com..
Submitted using http://www.outlookforums.com

You do not open Outlook PSTs using Windows Explorer. You use Outlook to open
them. If Outlook already has a PST configured, open Outlook, then click
File>Open>Outlook Data File and browse to the PST you're trying to open.
Select it and click OK.

If you want this PST to be your mail folders, then use the Mail applet in
Control Panel to add it to your mail profile as the delivery location or
default data file.
