Is there a real good way of backing up my Outlook Inbox, and Sent mail? I
found out that I can move all of my
seperate letters into folders (one at a time) and then zip them if I wish,
but it can be a long process. I have to do
it one letter at a time. Thanks in advance.

Why not try doing it one message at a time?

Isn't the mail folder simply one big text file like in netscape or
mozilla or kmail?

Can't you just zip that file?

Simply copy your .dbx files to a new folder, disk, diskette, cd, whatever...
Thay are called like Inbox.dbx or Sentmail.dbx. Wherever they are vary from
mashine to mashine, -just make a search in Explorer. And do the same with
your addressbook, too. Its a .wab-file, -like addessbook.wab

When you want to restore your old mailfolders etc. on your (new) computer,
disk etc. - you just import these files. Very simple. Read the Help-file.

Hi Ken

Have a look in Patrick's header.

| Will, he asked about Outlook, and this is for Outlook Express.
|
| Of course, he could have said Outlook, but *meant* Outlook
| Express. He wouldn't be the first person to have done this. ;-)

Yes - that's why I posted the link.

That says he's using Outlook Express, and that tells you what
he's using to post to the newsgroup. But it tells you nothing
about what software he uses for E-mail.

For example, take a look at my header here. It too says Outlook
Express. But I *don't* use Outlook Express for E-mail, but use
Outlook instead.

I suspected you might, and that Will's answer would be helpful to
you; I hope it is.

But please be careful. You asked about Outlook, and Outlook is a
very different product from Outlook Express.

Microsoft did none of us a favor when they named two such similar
programs with such similar names. There are many, many people who
make the same mistake you did, and don't even realize that
Outlook is a different program. They say "Outlook" when they
really mean "Outlook Express." The result is confusion, and often
inappropriate answers.

I did that yesterday, and found that I couldn't restore those messages back
to Outlook, but that's
because I did it wrong. Today I moved some test messages to a test folder
called "tank1". I then
copied tank1 to My Folders. I then deleted the messages from the original
folder. Then I copied
tank1 from "My Folders" back to the Outlook folder (overwriting the .dbx
file there) and the
messages were back!

Yesterday, I made the mistake of thinking that I could just copy tank1 to
Outlook when there
was no tank1 there to overwrite, and that Outlook would just see it and
restore it. Anyway,
it works. Thanks. :-) Btw, I tried import, and that didn't work for me, and
I couldn't find
anything in the help file about restoring them, but what I did worked. :-)

You do not have to back them up... move all your email folders on another
partition or physical drive or whatever storage which OE can access.

For backup purpose, it is preferably to have a folder synchroniziation
utility. I remember I was using one of the so called "Kareen's Power Toys"
with success. Of course, it is not exactly MS Backup, but rather one updated
copy of the original email folders. The advantage is that you do not risk
loosing any email as it might be the case with an unsynchronized backup.
Also, you can run the whole procedure automatically.
