Backing Up MP3 Files

Mp3's are already compressed. The only thing you can do is
convert them to a lower bitrate (thus lowering the quality
of the music). If you have a cd burner, simply make a data
cd (not a music cd) to back up your mp3's. You should be
able to get around 200 or so on an 80 minute cd. Cheap way
to backup, I do it all the time.

I take it that I can't use a program like TurboZIP to
further compress the MP3 files? If that's the case, then
I'll create a data CD as you suggested - I assume I can
just drag 'n drop the MP3 files to data CD. If I
understand your response, lowering the bitrate and backing
up after is an alternative to using the data CD, correct?

If you want to keep a copy of your mp3s, there is no alternative to backing
up. However, if you want to put them on a flash drive, memory stick, or some
other low-quantity storage device, you have a size limitation. To get around
this, you have 2 options:
1) Store less mp3s per flash memory device than you want
2) Decrease the size of the mp3s, and store more per flash memory device.
There is only one way to significantly decrease the size of an mp3. That
is to lower its bitrate (and therefore, sound quality). If you try to Zip or
Rar (or whatever compression you choose), I think they will compress
slightly, as they use different compression algorithms than do mp3 ripping
programs, but you more than likely won't notice any significant size
difference.
