Isn't there some way in Outlook to create a backup of my
email groups so they don't have to be rebuilt if I lose my
data?

Wow you waited 7 minutes before reposting!

www.inachis.com e-Backup is what I use for backing up Outlook Express. Newsgroups are not accessible from Outlook or stored in a .pst file.

Newbies often do not realize that newsgroups do not have the instant
prattle gratification of chat rooms. They post again as they might
splatter a chat room with another copy of their message. Since messages
scroll off, users get concerned that no one saw it. It's like a kid
tugging at mommie's cuff trying to get attention, or the know-it-all in
class raising their hand, hopping in their seat, canting "ooh, ooh, pick
me, pick me".

I've also seen Outlook Express screw up. You send, it seems to stick in
the Outbox (but a copy did get sent), and you send again. I remember
once accidentally ending up with 3 or 4 consecutive posts because I
thought a post got stuck in OE's outbox without knowing that each time a
copy did indeed get sent. Shit happens. When that happens, all posts
go at the same level in the thread (because they all have the same
parent post's reference ID), so I doubt that is what happened here with
Gary (he replied to his own post). He probably thought newsgroups are
like chat rooms.
