Backing up a AD DNS

Ok, after some confusion, I need to understand how I can properly backup an
AD DNS so that I can simply copy the DNS onto another DNS Server that is on
another Domain w/o a trust.

I can copy the /DNS folder but that isn't enough as I am very well aware.

I could start to use Non-AD (Old School) DNS zones if that makes it easier.

I just need to copy the sites onto another DNS

Thanks!

I'm confused, why would you want to copy DNS zone records into a network
that doesn't have access to the original domain? If your goal is to provide
name resolution to sites external to both domains, why not use the hosts
file instead? Or set up both DNS servers properly with DNS forwarders?

For testing purposes and to see how to manually backup / restore DNS. I
have been told numerous times to use System State but I just want to backup
the DNS configuration, nothing else....

Fair enough,
You can backup the dns cache by stopping the dns service, copy
%systemroot%\system32\dns\cache.dns or retrieving a copy directly from the
dns backup state folder (%systemroot%/DNS/Backup folder). But this won't
work for AD stored zones.

If your DNS server is AD integrated, recovering that database into
another domain is not an option. The security principles would never be
recognized. So my suggestion would simply be to reconstruct the dns server
as a plain dns server. You'll find this to be usefull since the resulting
dns file is txt readable as well for troubleshooting purposes.
