Welcome fluffy,
You've fallen amongst a wonderful group to help you. 'PowerPoint in church'
is an excellent use of the program; one I also take advantage of.
As far as your request, it is the free part that is tough. Professional
photographers like to be paid for their work (understandable). There are a
few that will give you permission to use their pictures for PowerPoint in
church via e-mail.
So my advice would be to ...
1) surf the net for some free pictures, if you find a site that has some
good ones.
2) if you find one that is not free, see if you can find the photographer
and e-mail them directly.
3) invest in a good digital camera and look for shots you can take on your
own.
4) talk to the pastor (or what ever his/her title) and see about getting a
PowerPoint budget.
Check these sites:

http://www.churchartworks.com/
you'll find a lot more.
