We use powerpoint to create song services for our
church. We create a powerpoint file for each song. Each
song has a background. When we are ready to put an
entire service together, we go to insert, then insert
slide from file. Not all the time, but many times when
we insert our previously created powerpoint file, the
background will be gone, so we have to add it again. It's
really a pain doing this each week. Does anyone have any
idea why this happens and maybe know a way to correct it?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Tim,

It is important to know what version of PowerPoint you are using. PP 2002
(aka PP XP) allows for multiple masters, while earlier versions did not.
Check to see if the background pictures are 'true' backgrounds (inserted
onto master slides) or are pictures that are full screen and behind
everything else.

Use the former method if you have PP 2002 or 2003, use the latter for PP
2000 or 97.

Also check out this site:
www.pptfaq.com
It is required reading for anyone using PowerPoint.

Also, if it's PowerPoint 2002, be sure that each time you insert a slide
that you check the box that says "Keep source formatting."

Hopefully, XP(2002).
If you set up you song files using the master, then when you insert them
into a "song list" file the lyrics can take on the attributes of that file,
including the background, font, etc.
It can and does work great.

The following site gives a great explanation of how to set up your
PowerPoint files for this purpose.

I also has other basics and information on projector setup that are very
beneficial too.
This information can be found on the menu items Hardware & Setup and
PowerPoint.
The link above is the main one you need for creating you lyric files and
your main songlist.

The links under the menu give an explanation of how to setup your song files
and your song list.
We use this method and it works great! No need for fancy dedicated software.
The only difficult thing is initially getting the lyrics into the 'puter.
Most hymn lyrics can be found on the internet, but sometimes have to be
altered if you want to match with a hymnal you may use.
But once you have the song file and you have used the master settings in
that file then your formatting is only done on the Song list file and when
the songs are inserted, they take on the attributes of the master slides in
the song list.

I have encountered the same problem, especially with Office XP. Make
sure you keep source formatting option checked.
