I stopped the service under Control Panel/Admin Tools/Services and in
the properties section I selected "manual," but after a while it
starts by itself and the properties is back to "automatic."

Anybody else facing this problem? What is the thing that sets BITS to
start by itself? How do it I stop it for good? BTW, the autoupdate
service has been and is disabled all this while.

Hi Pete,
BITS service is used by a number of applications other thatn AutoUpdate and
it can be started if any of those applications try to access BITS service.
Examples of other applications are MSN Messenger, MSN Explorer, MS Money etc

If you want the service not to be started, please change the startup type to
be "Disabled" in the "Control Panel/Admin Tools/Services". This will affect
any application that tries to use BITS service and hence it is not
recommended.

Also, we would like to understand why you dont want BITS service to be
running. Can you please give us some details?

Okay, got it. Thank you.

I've come across a few websites that recommend that BITS, among
several other services, be disabled for better performance. One of
these websites is as follows:

Could they be wrong?

Hello Pete,

I can't speak to the list of services at the link you provide, but I think
you should just be aware of what the service does, what other components
rely on the service, and the possible consequences of disabling the service
before doing so. Services exist for a reason and if you're not entirely sure
what the service does and the consequences of disabling a service, maybe you
should preserve the default behavior of the component (computer).

As Sudheer said, disabling BITS affects a many Microsoft applications and an
unknown number of third-party applications that rely on BITS to transfer
files, not just Automatic Update.
