background colors

hello and thank you for taking the time to read this. My
problem is this: somehow I must have changed a setting
that that will not allow the bgcolor attribute to work
properly when I open or design a webpage. The only
background color that appears in any webpage is the one
that I specify when I go to Display Properties, click on
the Appearance Tab, click the Advanced button and bring
up the Window Item. How can I change this to display
whatever color the webpage is set to display in the
<body bgcolor="WHATEVER_COLOR"> tag? This is driving me
crazy as it makes it hard to read certain text. I cannot
even change the theme in My Yahoo!. Please help me.
