How can I back up "C" and "D"? (windows xp home )
Besides media to back up to, you need software to do the backup.
Simplest form of backup is to do a simple copy of any files that you want
archived. Not appropriate for backing up C: (Windows and programs). More
suited for backup of personal files. No extra program required for this
except maybe burning software if transferring to CDR/RW or DVDR/RW
Backup programs allow you to select specific folders and files. These can
then be scheduled as a backup "job." Run the "job" periodically. How often
should be whatever schedule fits your needs best: daily is often used by
businesses. Weekly is good for many home users. Again, this is more suited
for the archiving of personal files.
Some backup programs also allow a full system backup and/or a "disaster
recovery." This backs up everything and can take many disk to accomplish.
Many users make weekly backups of data and monthly system backups.
Another option is "image" software. These programs will create a duplicate
image of a drive's contents. Some will compress the image to take up less
room on storage media.
XP Pro includes NTBackup (under System Tools in the Start menu). It's a
little clunky but can cover most backup needs. NTBackup is not built in to
XP Home but the setup file is included on standard XP Home CDs (it's not on
many OEM recovery CDs). The capabilities of NT Backup in XP Home are not
as broad as they are in XP Pro.
There are third party software solutions available too.
Many options available. Assess your needs and choose accordingly.
