In order to back up the entire system, use an imaging program like Acronis
True Image. In order to back up just your data, burn to cd/dvd-r. A good
program to use to automate data backups (if your data locations is more
complex than just being in My Documents) is Second Copy from
www.centered.com.

i certainly appreciate your help, although, being new at all of this i did
not understand what ou were getting at..or maybe i did not explain myself
well. i will try again and i truely apologize.
i have and had Windows XP home edition.
my computer has been acting strangely and through another source
([email protected] - a daily news letter), i found that if i back up
windows xp SP 2 (incase i need anythng from it later) i will gain more space
as well as helping to clean it up (which i need to do ever so badly!!) which
leads to the main question...
how do i back up the SP2? what all do i need to do? i have never done this
before and don't now how. i have a CD and a burner (i know how to use that
haha) but, how do i get into copy and remove programs and chose only the SP2
stuff to copy or back up onto a disc?
Thank you again and i apologize for not being more clear.

You found out wrong.
Backing up the operating system will not result in more free space on the
hard drive.
Nor will it 'clean up' your system.

Your symptoms could very will be cause by malware like viruses.

Try again to reframe your question, after first ignoring what you
'understood' form the 'daily newsletter.'

At any rate, the hard drive space regained will be insignificant compared to
the size of modern hard drives. If you need more hard drive capacity, buy a
larger drive; cost for a 300 GByte hard drive have dropped below $100 US.

If you need to 'clean up' your system you might try uninstalling unneeded
programs, clearing out temporary files, or even backing up all your data and
then doing a clean install of Windows XP Home, all updates, and all
programs.

BUT FIRST make sure your system is not infested by malware and that you use
anti-malware protection. Do what is necessary and do not do what is
unnecessary.

Perhaps the source that the OP mentioned meant to backup the remove folders
from the system. If you then delete the folders, you can gain lots of
space, but the tradeoff occurs when you need to uninstall a patch. You
would first need to find and restore the missing remove folder. This whole
operation seems like more trouble than it is worth.

Just follow the advice given in the newsletter. Two ways to do this are burn
the uninstall SP2 files to a CD or copy to a removable drive. Then use Add
Remove to delete the $NtUninstallKBxxxxxxxx on your pc.

Move the folder Windows\$NtServicePackUninstall$ to a cd [or whereever you like] and when you want any stuff from it or want to uninstall it, put it back there.
Maybe that's what you want.Tell us

If you are talking about backup the Sp2 so that you can install it later [When you reinstall winxp], it's called SlipStreaming. And here's the info and method of Slipstreaming :
