I used to save my library files -- not the music files, the library
information -- when I used XP. How can I back-up these files in Vista?

If you don't get a reply here you might want to post to the
microsoft.public.windows.vista.music_pictures_video newsgroup.

Thanks Rock, my ISP doesn't support Usenet groups and I can't navigate to
that group on Google Groups. Is there another way of reading it?

its very easy.
just set up another account using microsoft news server.

msnews.microsoft.com

no logon needed.

All ISPs support Usenet groups. What I think you mean is that your ISP
doesn't provide a news server.

But that doesn't matter. There are lots of other news servers (some
free; some fee-based) available to you. For these Microsoft groups
(including this one and the one Rock recommends below), the best
server is to use is Microsoft's own news server, msnews.microsoft.com.
It's free and will provide a much better experience than the awful web
interface you're using, which is the slowest, clunkiest, most
error-prone method there is. Do yourself a favor and switch to a
newsreader, such as Outlook Express, which comes with Windows. See
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/outlookexpressnewreader.htm

I personally use four different news servers, only one of which is
provided by my ISP.

You're right. I should have said my ISP no longer has a news server.

I'm more than familiar with Usenet -- I was using it in the 1980s!

Hi, Billby.

Just click here:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.vista.file_management

That one click should start OE/WM/WLM - depending on which Windows version
and news reader you have installed; connect you to the MS public news
server; connect you to THIS NG; and download the 300 latest messages. At
your convenience, you can click Tools | Options and customize it to suit
yourself. You can Reset the List of Newsgroups to find 2,000 groups in
several languages. Type into the "Display newsgroups that contain" to find
the ones that interest you.

Or click:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.vista.music_pictures_video

That should take you directly to the NG that Rock suggested several messages
ago.

It's just like Usenet, except that the news server is hosted by Microsoft.
It's free and does not require you to log on. ;<) Other news servers
simply "slurp" messages from this host and relay them and any responses to
and from their own subscribers - risking delays, out-of-sequence threads,
and even lost messages in both directions.
