Hi, I want to back up my data, and tried to use "MS Back up" but it
wont recognise my DVD RW drive. My computer has multiple users, all
with different mail settings and the like. I would like to back
everything up in one go.
I have read conflicting info as to whether this is fixable or not,
and would aoppreciate any help.

You cannot use the native back up to back up to CDs or DVDs. I would suggest
a third party solution, such as Drive Image 7 (www.powerquest.com).

Hi Des,

The backup utility does not recognize or use optical media (CD or DVD). You
will need a different backup strategy. If you want to make a backup of the
system "as is" for restoration, then you should look into imaging software
(most of these programs WILL backup to DD media). If you are going to use
the native backup utility, then you should make partial backups of files
that you do not want to lose, but not the whole system.

Thanks for the tip, Rick. I downloaded the program, but I must be having an
off day, as I found the installation instructions a bit confusing,
especially when it refers to running in DOS.
Maybe I'll try again later.

Hi Harry, I donloaded the trial version but despite looking exactly what I
am after, it wont write to my drive. I have a pioneer DVR106d, and a window
flashed up suggesting the firmware might need updating, but unfortunately my
efforts have come to nothing.
Thanks for the suggestion though, it's definately nearer to whatI wanted.

While Image for Windows is inexpensive it is not as easy to use as other
imaging software. Acronis True Image is exceptionally easy to use and is
worth the $49 US http://www.acronis.com/products/trueimage/

Des
it is possible to back up to a CD-RW or a DVD-RW from XP's Backup program
The only catch is that you need "Packet writing Software" like INCD from Nero
....there are others
You use this program to format the CD/DVD and then you are able to use it just
like a hard drive.
you can drag and drop files, erase files, add files on the fly......and back up
files/directories to it so long they do not exceed the space limitations of the
disc.

Did you try upgrading the firmware? I see an upgrade this is a good site.

Before upgrading firmware make certain that you use one of the tools that
will save your current version so that you can go back if needed.
