After installing XP can the back-up files of the previous
Windows version (98SE) be deleted or moved to a different
drive.

If you wish to continue to have the option to be able to remove XP and go
back to 98SE without having to format and start over, the answer is no. If
you are comfortable with XP and have no plans to return to 98SE you can
delete the files. Moving them is the same as deleting them as I believe
they need to be in their default location in order for the uninstall to be
properly executed from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.
