Back to its original config

My old Vaio, that I only use as a test machine, has become so slow now that
I thought of setting it back to its original config, i.e. use the system
recovery cds that came with it to set it as it was when I bought it. But I
just thought that the version of Windows XP will then be the original one
i.e. not even SP1. If I do so, will I be able to download all the updates
for Windows XP or will it be too late? I read that SP1 is not (or soon will
not be) anymore maintained.

ah brought next idea :

ah,

The SP2 download for XP is available at;

http://www.topshareware.com/Windows-XP-SP2-download-17215.htm

I would suggest that you save the download file for future use, if
necessary. All other updates will still be available via the Windows
Update site. ^^

Before you start make an inventory of the hardware (Video Card, Sound,
Network card, Etc.) download the latest drivers or at the very least make
sure you have a CD or Disk with the drivers you need.

If you not sure what you have then download Belarc Advisor:
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
It will do an inventory of what you have.

download the latest drivers <<
What is the point in downloading anything in a machine that is going to go
back to its original config? Everything will be erased or do I get it
wrong?

Thank you for this but I presently have SP2 on both my laptops so I think
that I'll install SP2 directly after I go back to the original config.

SP1 is still available by clicking the little "Go" button on the right
side of this page
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp1/network.mspx

If you don't want all of SP2 you can apply SP1 and pick and choose
hotfixes from here http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/

Just in case there is a problem along the way, these things do happen every
once in while.

That is correct, support for SP1 is closing, however SP2 includes SP1
so once you do the restore apply it and you will be good to go.
