I tried setting up a backup, and all I see is the "user friendly"
version that seems to only give some choices of what to back up (or
"all). It also doesn't let you define any of the customization in backup
that NTBackup used to.

Am I missing something, or can't I do flexible backups like I did before?

Thanks!

Unfortunately, you're not missing a thing. Even on Professional or
Ultimate, you can't choose what to backup by file location, only by file
type. Microsoft doesn't want you to think in terms of disks and folders any
more, only in terms of your special folders (i.e. Documents, Music,
Pictures, etc.) and file types.

So, if you have 100 jpg's of your children that you want backed up and
10,000 jpgs in the clip art folder for your whizbang photo editor program,
you must backup the 10,000 in order to backup the 100. Even worse, if your
backup media is a two GB USB flash memory and all the documents you want to
back up easily fit, but the 10,000 clip art puts you over the top then
you're just out of luck. You can't do a backup.

Maybe one of the programs that hide folders would work to solve this type of
dilemma. Not sure if any run in Vista, but would be a good idea if they
could be hidden from the backup program.

Sounds like a pretty nasty bug in dire need of resolution before shipping.
No where near difficult to resolve either?
What am I missing?

Do you mean programs that hide folders like a root kit? I sure as h*** hope
not! Just get a different backup program.

My normal backup scenario on my network is to use my MediaCenter PC to
backup all of my other PCs at night. I use Cobian Backup from
http://www.cobian.se/ connecting to drives mapped to all of the other PCs.
Unfortunately, I haven't gotten as far into Vista yet as to be able to
successfully map a drive on XP to a share on Vista so my MediaCenter can't
backup my Vista but I was able to install Cobian on Vista and backup to a
drive mapped to a share on my MediaCenter and it works great.

Microsoft has a habit of putting out products with flaws that create a
market for 3rd party products and then, when the 3rd party products get too
good, or too big, Microsoft comes out with their own solution, putting the
3rd party companies basically out of business.

True, Quite few DVD-RW drives ship with the software.
Whether it is Vista Compatible though is another story....

Which program? Just curious. I'm not stating it to be facetious.
Just surprised at how old some of the software is with home users trying out
Vista.
I can't even get my Dad to try XP, he quit using PC's after NT when he
retired.
So I turned off the skins told him I reverted it back for him...and
voila...he thinks he is using NT and quit complaining lol.

I am running it on Vista Ultimate x86 RTM.

why not temporarily move the unwanted files to a new location and move them
back when finished?

Short answer is NO. Long answer is you can only select files by file type
to be backed up. There is no capability for including or excluding within a
file type.

Thanks for the replies - what a disaster this brain-dead Backup is.

I am on RTM Ultimate x32 by the way, so it's what we will get.

What genius decided to pull all those customization features out of
backup I wonder....

They wrote a new backup program from scratch, so it is the case that they
did not include the feature rather than that they left it out. I think the
real answer is that the team did not have enough resources and time to take
the app to the level they wanted to and that the app will grow over time.
