Looks like a good character map replacement, although I wonder why
it's not listed at any of the major freeware sites I have bookmarked.

Incidentally, here's a similar program:

(the top listing.)

I found it months ago when at comp.fonts. The author seems to keep
the program up to date. (Some nice links over at cf news group.)

The poster, phil, said it's better than CharMap.

Thanks for your link for MapOfChars.

I totally agree and hope it gets added to the Pricelessware list.
However, it really could use a small help file. One needs to know that
you have to select a character before copying it. Also, it has the
same limitations as Character Map regarding copying characters into
notepad and other text based programs. It's main advantate is that
older far sighted people like me will appreciate it's larger
presentation of the character list.

Got the link from Snapfiles:

As for BabelMap is a good program, but it's not really a Character Map
replacement because it does so much more and thus might be confusing
to the average user. For instance, the default startup lists numerous
fonts I don't have on my system. To only list fonts on one's system,
you have to go into options and decheck "Filter Out Non-Unicode Fonts".

I think Map of Chars is more to my liking since my needs are simple.

This group can bring a web site down in seconds. :-)

Try it now. I just left the site.

Strange.... I just verified that I can access the site and do the
downloads, all of them.

That's odd. I have the (possibly outdated) version 1.7.2 on disk, which
*has* a detailed help file.

My version is 2.9. You are talking about "Map of Chars" aren't you? If
you're talking about "BabelMap", my version is 1.9.1 and yes, it does
have a help file.

Seems we misunderstood each others references. I meant BabelMap while
you talked about MapOfChars. Happens, when the subject changes too
often... ;-)

It was my fault. I misunderstood Michael Andrews because I didn't
completely read the reference he linked to. Sorry.
