Has anyone been able to play Axis and Allies newest game by Atari on Windows
Vista Home Edition 32bit? If so, how did you get it to work? I have tried
the compatibility wizard and am now looking into installing XP and
partitioning my hard drive. I would like to aviod that if I can. That looks
to be quite a process. I like Vista very much, but I have a few games that I
would like to play that do not work.

Any help would be appreciated. I was addicted to Axis and Allies, but now I
cannot play it on my new pc. I have a great system and was dieing to see how
the game ran.

Thanks in advance for any help or ideas from you.

Hello Mike.

What is the game doing or not doing correctly? Any error messages would
help focus in on the specific issue.

I like this game too.

I apologize, an error message would have been smart to include...

The program installs fine with no errors, but when I click on it to start it
I get this error:

Runtime Error!
abnormal program termination

....which is inside of a box titled : Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

After I click OK, the program terminates. The program actually never
starts. Then, the CD/DVD drive just keeps running and will not eject. I
have to reboot to fix that.

I have a Dell Dimension DXP061 with an Intel Core2 CPU 6420 @ 2.13 GHz 2.13
GHz
I have 2046 MB of RAM and my Vista is the Home Premium 32 bit version. I
also have an ATI Radeon X1300/X1550 series 256K Video Card

Thanks again for any help. I have also been looking in Virtual PC programs,
but I worry that the gaming would not be at the full capabilities of my
computer.

Hello Mike.

I suspect this is due to the SecuROM protection on the game. Their support
website is http://www.securom.com/support.asp.

If you don't get any joy with that route the only option I can suggest would
be installing a no-CD crack, which would remove the SecuROM protection from
the game.
Thanks again for any help. I have also been looking in Virtual PC
programs,
but I worry that the gaming would not be at the full capabilities of my
computer.

Virtual PC for example won't have any graphics acceleration, it emulates
just a bog standard 2D graphics card, so I doubt the game would run.

I'd agree -- the original version of Civ4 (which also has SecuROM)
acts much the same way [I didn't get the abnormal termination, I
had to kill the process manually].

Mike -- try right-clicking on the icon in the Games folder:

+ Customize
+ Edit (the Play/Default version)
+ Click on the Compatibility Tab
+ Select run this program in Compatibility mode for XP SP2
(may not be needed, but doesn't hurt either)
+ Select "Run this program as an administrator"
(This is required -- SecuROM games have to have
admin rights to access the drive however this
copy protection method tries to do...)

Once I did this, the game started up fine. I will confess
I'm not very good at it (never had much patience to play
through the whole thing... I always play out the first
attack way [as US, attacked by Japan in China] -- and
4 or 5 hours later after I fight them off, I feel like
I've played enough.. ;) )

Thank you both for the help. I have been busy at work and unable to try yet,
but I will soon. I appreciate you two taking time and helping out...thanks.

Just an update for anyone having trouble with Axis and Allies....Thanks to
great help from this forum, Paul Smith, and Don Morris, and from SecuROM I
was able to get the game up and running.

This link is what worked for me.

http://www.securom.com/support.asp

I went to the site, clicked on the language of choice for me, english, then
followed the instructions. After emailing them with what they asked for,
they replied the next day with more instructions. The first email I sent, I
included the analysis file they asked for, they emailed back asking for a
screenshot of the error I was getting, then a day later they emailed me a
solution. They sent me a new executable file to start the game with and it
worked like a charm.
