[AVU] - AVG update - 2004/03/08 - virus db : 394

I keep seeing where you guy's add to AVG to get updates I'm new computers is
it hard to do and if's it's not could you please tell me how.Thank you for
your time and help.

Here goes :-
There is a very simple way to update your AVG virus definitions.
Unfortunately this does not appear to be working very well at the moment,
but you should try it first, if it doesn't complete then try the second
method.

1st method:-
1 Open AVG - select 'Service' on upper menu bar - then select 'Update'
from the dropdown menu
2 Select the 'From Internet' button - then select 'Update now' button in
the next window.
3 You should now see a window in which you will see your update files
downloading.
(this is the bit where the system is not working well at the
moment.........and so if this bit fails then go to 2nd method)
4 However, should this stage work OK and you see a 'Live' OK button
appear, select it.
5 Now close AVG, and then re-open it, you will now see a window appear
and AVG will be updating itself.

2nd Method:-

1 Open AVG - select 'Help' on upper menu bar - then select 'program info'
2 In this next window on the Program tab, you will see your Version and
Database numbers (mine are 'program version 6.0.616 and virus database 395)
3 Make a note of these 2 numbers so that you can select the proper update
when the time comes.
4 Go to this website http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_updt6.php?lng=fe
5 Under 'Which Update do you need' select AVG Anti virus Free Edition
(presuming of course that this is your edition of AVG)
6 You will then see several boxes below this point, each with a given
update file for given versions of AVG.
7 Pick the one that corresponds to your prog/version etc and select the
..bin file.
8 you are now into a downloading proceedure and will be asked where you
want to download this file to. You should select the 'update' folder within
AVG wherever it is on your hard drive (Mine for instance is in C:/Program
Files/Grisoft/AVG6/Updates)
9 Hit the 'go' button (whatever it is called to start the download) and
you will see the process start.
10 When the download completes, open up AVG and you will see an automatic
update take place

Now this may seem very complicated, it just depends how 'new' you are to
computers, but if you follow this plan your update should work OK

As the Free version update server seems to be inundated at the moment with
the number of updates being released it would be useful to use other servers
at Grisoft, but only 1 server is given for updating in the free Version.
Avid users of AVG might be interested in this :-

Substitute the following into the url.ini file found in the AVG folder:-

[SERVER_NAME]
1=free.grisoft.cz
2=ftp.grisoft.com
3=www.grisoft.com

[SERVER_URL]
1=http://free.grisoft.cz/softw/60/fe
2=ftp.grisoft.com/pub/softw/60/fe/

Actual URL=3


Then shutdown and restart AVG. You will now have 3 servers to choose from.

Question (might be a stupid one): If one would miss an update for AVG,
i.e. updated 392 and 394, but missed 393, would one's virusbase still
be up-to-date ? And if not, how could one "fix" this ?
