Hi,

Can anyone tell me what "avserv" does? A google search doesn't reveal
much (anything).

I see it as a process on the XP task manager taking a high percentage
of resources, right after start up before I run any programs. The
computer runs slow when it's there, and if I highlight it and 'End
Process' the computer runs fast again.

Thanks.

i suspect it may be part of an anti-virus program doing a scheduled
system scan but it's awfully difficult to tell with just a name...

a couple things you can try - if you think it's malware, try scanning
it and/or sending it to your av developer for analysis...

to get more info about it, try using process explorer from
http://www.sysinternals.com to view it's properties and perhaps find
out where it's running from (if it's a legit program it's probably
running from an installation directory that looks familiar to you)...

It is in fact, the Sasser Worm. My daughter-in-law just removed 35 instances
of this worm on her system. NAV 2004 missed it completely but Avast caught
it just fine. I would suggest that you download the Avast AV program. It is
entirely free for home use and much less intrusive than some of the more
commercial programs.

She had avserve.exe and aserve2.exe and it was chewing up memory resources
like you cannot believe. If you look in your startup configuration you will
probably see that it starts automatically on Windows startup.
