Im on one now and it really is the worst thing ever. Im doing work that requires alot of effort and getting minimum wage and grief to speed up from the boss.

I knew i should have gone to australia.

I guess luck tends to be a major factor in getting a goodun...

I hope the time flies by for you! :o

You should go hand yourself in Mucks and get sent over to oz, its freaking amazing lifestyle over here. When you graduate from uni or have some time off, i would suggest you all get a one year working holiday visa and head to oz. Its great out here guys.

Hey Bhodi :) How are things across the ditch there? You got much longer?

4 weeks left. Gutted :-(

Remember, bodhi, when you almost took work placement instead of going to Oz?

And most of us said 'Visit Australia'?

We wuz right, weren't we? ;)

Glad you had a good time, anyway.

Marley, you will benefit from your experience, believe it or not. You've learnt that it don't matter how good you are, how many qualifications you've got or how you can do the job better than anybody else - job satisfaction depends on one thing and one thing only - the people you work with.

Politics at work must be one of the worst things ever. Everybody is looking for an angle, an advancement, and rather than apreciate your efforts, they'll see you doing well as undermining them.

And that's simplifying things a great deal.

I only wish I'd been so sussed when I first started work.

I'd say - don't concentrate on how well you can do your task but rather develop an instinct to apraise your work colleagues and act accordingly.

Life is a theatre and the better you can act the further you'll advance.

You may just be lucky enough to find yourself working with genuine people. Then you are truly lucky.

But - there's a lot of a***holes out there, so shields up.

Believe me, I'm telling the truth, took me years to work that one out.

Yeah, cant believe how quickly the year has gone!! It doesnt seem like a year since you lot all said to go to oz!! :-)

Yeah, im going to Auckland on 14th April, spending 2 weeks driving around NZ with 2 danish guys i met on the east coast of oz, then back to Auckland for a few weeks.

Anyone know anything about NZ immigration? I want to work for a few weeks in NZ before going back to OZ for 3 months. Think i can get work without a visa?! :-)

This is the call free number for NZ Immigration,
Ph: 0508 558 855

they'll tell you anything you want to know. John sez to deal with the Dunedin office if you can, sez they're really friendly & couldn't do enough to help him. I doubt if you'd have any trouble, we're still a member of the commonwelth so being Brittish gives you an advantage:) .

Do the working visas apply to NZ aswell? I just wanna go and spend a year maybe doing some bar work or something. Time away from computers would really do me some good :).

I'm afraid I really don't know sorry. The phone number I mentioned should get you the answers you need, or you could try 0064 09 9144100 (includes national & area codes) Judging by the area code I'd say that was the Auckland office.

I do know that half the bartenders in this country come from the UK so i don't think you'd have much trouble finding a job. Our local irish bar employes scousers a lot because most kiwis can't tell the difference between an irish & a scouse accent. NZders (particularly the female variety) tend to find the scouse accent very se*y, something John still has trouble believing since he says it is one of the most disliked accents in the UK.

One thing to watch out for though, scouse is spoken very fast & those of us with the down under drawl often have trouble keeping up. If you notice people nodding a lot & going "ahah ahah yes... of course..." etc, a lot then you may need to slow down. I hardly hear John's accent any more, but I remember when I first met him, when he gets excited or enthusiastic about something his accent gets stronger & he speaks much faster, I would understand about 1 word in 10 if I was lucky :p

Haha its funny you say that.. After 3 months of uni everyone i lived with pointed out how it took them 2 months to begin to understand me. Especially after a few drinks... i also get excited and that nodding thing drives me mad. The ladies like a bit of scouse ;), thats never a bad thing although sounding irish isnt great :). I hear nothing but praise for NZ so i think ill take the plunge and have a trip out there.
