Hello All,

I've seen some recent postings on what sounds like a
similar issue, but I don't seem to see an answer that
works for me.

Win2k, Office 2k, Powerpoint 2000 SP-3 (9.0.6620)

I have a presentation with some avi files in it that USED
TO play directly on the slide when I clicked them during a
slide show. (or on the slide when I double clicked them in
normal edit mode)

Now, on the same presentations, on the same computer, the
AVIs dissapear (go blank) when I do either of the above.

If I put the files on another machine, it works fine.

Any idea what I may have done on the non-working machine
(and how to fix it)?

The AVIs play fine directly in media player...they just
wont play in the presentation environment anymore...

Thanks,
- Al

There is the ten dollar question. What have you installed/updated on the
machine?

Of course, that is a great question...
I have made every attempt to uninstall everything recent,
and even things I had on the machine while it still worked
properly...
I reinstalled Office 2K and Media Player 9...
Still no luck...AVIs in PPT just go blank when you click
on them...very frustrating...

Al,

Simply removing applications won't solve the problem because they have
already made changes in the registry and installed various files. If you
can tell us what multimedia software you may have installed maybe we can
help out.

Sad answer is it is hard to say...I ran several video
editing demo versions recently....

I do have some more insight into the behavior, though:

I have tried mpg files, and they work...
I have tried wmv files, and they work...
I have even tried a different set of avi files, and they
work!
I am thinking it is avi codec related, but I havent quite
narrowed in on it yet...

Sadly, I have installed (and unistalled) several video
editing software demos lately, and cannot even begin to
name which ones...

I do have an update on the bahavior, though:
I tried an mpg, it worked...
I tried a wmv, it worked...
I even tried a different type of avi, and it worked!

I think it is codec related...at first look, it seems that
the problem is with the Indeo avi's (R3.2 & R5.1) but not
any other codec...
unfortunatly most of the avi's I use are indeo...

I will keep digging...

If you think of anything, let me know...
Thanks,
- Al

First off, sorry for the double post...I got busy and
thought I lost the message, but it turns out I had already
sent it...

Second, I reinstalled Indeo codecs and some luck...sort
of...

I created a new ppt and put in an indeo avi, and it
worked...

So I went back to my old presentations, and they still
didnt work...

I now think there is some weird link behavior going on
within PPT that I dont understand:

If I copy the ppt file and the avi files to a new
location, they seem to start working (mostly)...

I will do some research on how ppt stores the links and
see if I can get to the bottom of it...

Thanks for your help.
