I am using ppt 2002 with Win XP Professional as the OS. My problem is
similar to that mentioned by Suneet Mittal and posted on 7/15. I use the
the same commands to insert an avi file but when playing the move by
double-clicking or in Slide Show mode I get a white background where the
movie should be which persists and w/o the first frame of the movie
reappearing. I have the same file in another ppt presentatation and it
plays w/o problems (as it does using Windows Media player). If I insert the
"no problem" movie into my problem presentation, it plays fine, but if I
copy the "no problem" movie into the same folder as the "problem"
presentation, I get the same behavior. I have even tried inserting a new
slide, inserting the movie, etc., etc., but still get the same behavior.
Any suggestions? Thanks.

This sounds like the limit on the length of the path to the video has been
exceeded. Try moving the problem PowerPoint presentation and the video to
C:\Test_path, for example. That will guarantee that the path to the video does
not exceed 128 characters (or whatever the limit is). Does it work now?

Fascinating. Yes, that did the trick. I was not aware of the path length
character limitation and none of the rather thick books I have on PPT has
anything about it (either that or I did not read them carefully enough).
The .ppt file and video are in the same folder and I also tested your
suggestion on copying the folder to the desktop. The video plays fine then,
but when moving the folder back to its original location, it doesn't. This
will not affect the ultimate presentation of the file, since I have to copy
each folder from a CD to the desktop of the computer I use to make classroom
presentations. Nevertheless, I think I'll move everything out or My
Documents, etc., to shorten the path length. Thanks for the help.
