I created an Avil file using Movie Maker 2, but I was
unable to open the file in either Pinnacle System's
Studio 8 or Ulead's Moviefactory 2. The error messages
indicate that the format is unsupported or there is a
file mismatch. Is the AVI format created in Moviemaker 2
unique or do I have to tweak the AVI settings?

I discovered that I was able to open the same AVI file in
Ulead's Moviefactory (1) and convert it to a DVD mpeg
file.

Hi There,

MM2 creates either a WMV format or DV-AVI format. I would be very surprised
if the Pinnacle software could not handle the DV-AVI. Are you trying to
"Open" the file instead of "Import" ?? or whatever expression for import
Pinnacle uses.

Daryl,

See the Saving Movies... General page of www.papajohn.org

MM2 saves DV-AVI files as type 1. Pinnacle Studio 8 needs type II files. You
need to convert them. See the DVD Burning... Pinnacle Studio 8 page for a
free conversion utility.

Hi John:

Thanks for the timely response. I tried opening the file
the same way I've done with other AVIs in Studio 8.

I opened two AVI clips in my Ulead Moviefactory (1), one
created by Movie Maker 2 and the other created by Studio
8. I then checked the properties of both clips. The
only difference between the two AVI clips was in the
Video Compresssion. The clip from Studio 8 states in the
Video Compression: DV Video Encoder - Type 2, while the
clip created by Movie Maker 2 shows DV Video Encoder -
Type 1. It appears as if I need to convert or encode the
clip from Type 1 to Type 2 before I can do further
editing in Studio 8 or to convert and burn in Ulead
Moviefactory. Any Suggestions? I guess it helps
sometimes to reduce the problem to writing before the
brain kicks in and tries to analyze the issue.

Again, thanks for the response.

Once again you remain the man, Papajohn and yes....he is
correct. You need to convert the .avi file to a type 1
file which is easily done with a converting utility.
Check out Papajohn's website (an invaluable aid) and
you'll find a link there or email me at (e-mail address removed).
