AVI-files don't sound, but MPEG and MP3 does. Why ?!

When i play my AVI-films, they play alright but I can't
hear any sound. Why is this ? I suspect that their is
some kind om problem with my codecs. But what to do ?

Where can I find the right codec, does it matter where on
my computer I install it ?
