I was sent an instructional CD with audio text
plus video. It has just this one .AVI file on CD
Latest Windows Media Player opens the audio but
shows only psychedelic changing color patterns
instead of the video. I find all of the dropdowns
and even their titles to click on......useless.

Where can I find instructions or a manual?

Thank you.

Do a Google search for "Media Player Classic Download" and use that
instead of Windows Media Player to view the video - it is free.

Another good free video and DVD player is VLC Player.

The reason Windows Media Player will not play your video is that it
lacks the proper codec for an .avi file (as well as many other types
of video codecs).

Install this codec and try your file again

This one seems to have installed what I needed.
Thank you, Jyeshta.

You're welcome, Bill. If I'd had the right link handy for Media
Player Classic, I would have given it to you. It's an excellent
player. There might be some bogus download links for it - that's all
I can figure.

Oh, sorry - I replied without first looking at your link, because I
had a number of windows open already. I just looked at your link -
looks like you got the right Media Player Classic, only it, too,
lacked the specific codec you needed.

Usually MPC plays anything I throw at it so I assumed it would work
for your video. I'm glad I also recommended VLC Player which is
working for you.

Did that, Mike. Installed it. When I tried to run the .avi
file, it still told me I needed an additional codec. Could
you amplify your instructions above, to make sure I downloaded
and installed the right thing?

Sorry, but I got the .AVI file to run after installing PLC,
but my associate still wants me to try Windows Media Player.

Windows Media Player opens with a dozen choices like Burn and
Shuffle and Scan and many of these lead to more multiple
choices, none of which are of any use in doing a simple
task: Go to a browsed AVI file and open it. There is no
upper left corner drop-down File menu. It must be a wonderful media
player for modern pop garbage but it doesn't seem to follow the
usual protocols.

Are there any instructions anywhere?

Andy, I downloaded it, unzipped it, saved it, and ran it.
I led it to my file, and it claimed that some CODEC was missing.
I execute GSpot but then what? Does it correct my file so
that it will run on raw Windows Media Player, and if so, how do
I save the 'corrected' file to run on WMP?

WMP has the ability to play .avi files. Make sure you have it selected as a file
type.
On the menu bar click Tools > Options > file Types tab.
If .avi is unchecked, check it and click Apply > Ok.

Any plug-ins, codecs, skins, visualizations, etc. can be obtained at:

Good lead, Brian. But I start at All Programs>>Windows Media Player
and how do I get to where I can follow your Tools>>etcetera? Sorry
to have to ask.....

Moving right along, I found Control Panel>>Folder Options>>File Types
and I see that .avi and .wmv are both shown. Perhaps
that answers the first half of my question. Of course, the basic
problem was solved when I followed other advice and downloaded
and installed VLC Media Player. I get annoyed when things happen,
such as this, where I have XP and SP2 and all of the forever updates,
yet the first time I go to use the built-in WMP, that lists .AVI, I
have to go to off-Microsoft sites to grope for what else to install.
