Since I understand that maybe the only way I can copy a movie to watch it on
tv is to begin by saving it as an avi file, could somebody tell me in simple
terms how to save it as an avi file? Or tell if it is saved that way?
Thanks!

Hello,

If your file is an AVI it will have a file name along the lines of
somefilename.avi

If your ultimate goal is to create a DVD playable on a standard DVD
playyer you need,,,,

A computer with a DVD burner (or CD burner to create a mini DVD)

Software to convert your file into the necessary format for DVD playing

DVD burners are fairly cheap and it is not uncommon to find that a DVD
creation program comes with it. Note that you almost never get software if
you buy what is called an OEM berner (probably over the internet)

Dependent on what DVD software you have you can choose to edit the AVI
file in either Movie Maker or a program like Nero (www.nero.com) Note that
Movie Maker can not do the next step....make the files for a DVD

That should get you started...if you need any more help do please
ask....

Well, I don't think it IS an avi file - haven't seen that extension anywhere.
What can I click on to tell? And if it isn't, how to I convert it to one?
My son has Nero - so can I copy it to cd from my computer, load it in Nero

Hello,

OK, I ned to know a lot more than I do right now....

1) How do you come to have this file??? Have you captured it?, If so what
with, or,

2) Have you created it in Movie Maker or some other program. If so what
program.

3) Have you read fully the helpfile that comes with whatever software you
are using? Have you read the section on creating the files...If you do not
understand what it says can you copy and paste it here so thatwe can have a
look.

I am not an Instant Expert

I created the entire movie IN movie maker. Scanned pictures in to my photo
software, then imported them into mm. Added songs....and am comletely done
with my project except for saving/copying it.

OK,

Run Movie Maker and load your project. Press CTRL-P and follow the wizard
carefully. As you want an AVI file when you come to the question about file
type make sure the MORE OPTIONS button is clicked and select DV-AVI. Thats
it.

The full procedure is contained in the help file...search for the expression
"SAVE"

Watch out for the latest version of "Rename Codecs" it should be ready for
download in a few days from now.
The Truth is, I am not an Instant Expert !!

Have just attempted to play DV/AVI movie disc on DVDplayer and the player
tells me 'unknown disc'.
Iimported saved project into Sonic.
where am I wrong?

Your DVD player can't play a DV-AVI file.
The reason for starting with a DV-AVI is that it is higher quality so it's
the best place to start.
From there you need a DVD authoring program which will convert the file to
DVD MPEG2 files and burn those to DVD. Sonic's MyDVD, although not a very
good program, will do this for you but it sounds as though you created a
"Data disk" instead of a DVD and that's why you have the DV-AVI files on the
disk that is unrecognized by your DVD player.
There's a list of popular DVD authoring programs on my website in the "DVD
Programs" section.
