avi file plays, but doesn't import?

I'm trying to import an avi file
it plays in windows media player
but windows movie maker says the codec is not installed.
the download box is checked
what's the deal?

movie maker cannot use all the codecs that WMP can, so I suspect your avi is
one of the hundreds that isn't compatible with MM, convert it to wmv and use
it.
