AVG7 and Authenticated SMTP

Hi,

using the trial AVG7 and all going well. I've set up the various POP and
SMTP server details and email scanning (using OE for mail) works fine.
I've just learned, however, that my ISP is going to require outgoing
server authentication in the near future and whilst I know how to set
that up in OE I can't see how to get those details into AVG to allowe it
to initiate authentication. Can anyone help please?

Forgot to say that the login details for the smtp server are different to
those of the pop server so specific login details would be added in OE.

I think that's all you do.
The password is set up in the email client it's only the local address that
changes in the email program to direct it to the AVG email scanner.
I might be wrong though!!!
 
I tried to get it to work, and could not. Contacted AVG support and they
were no help. Stopped using OE and used outlook and it works like a charm.
The only way I could get it to work in OE was to not scan outgoing mail.
Scanning incoming with server authentication seems to work though.

thanks - I've been trying all morning to get this to work and cannot
either. I don't want to use Outlook, though, as everyone in my house
uses OE and they won't want to change! I suppose I could just forget
about scanning outgoing mail - in any case that's not as important as
scanning incoming mail, I guess. Or should I revert to AVG 6 (free)
which has the OE plugin, however weak it may possibly be? I'm only using
the AVG 7 trial at the moment so haven't actually invested any money as
yet.

I suppose the question is, how important is outgoing mail scanning if
everything inbound is being checked for viruses?

I have no problems using authenticated SMTP with AVG7. It works
perfectly.

All I did was setup the SMTP proxy server as I normally would and just
set my e-mail client (The Bat!) to use my username and password to
send e-mail.

but that could be because you use AVG's plugin for The Bat! I'mn using
OE and have to use their personal email scanner as there is no plugin for
OE with AVG7

This feature also does not work with AVG 6 (free). You cannot scan
outgoing email using their Personal Email Scanner if the smtp server
requires authentication. The authentication will not be passed to the
upstream server after the scanning.

There are two alternatives.

1. Use an smtp server that does not require authentication
2. Don't scan outgoing email.

In my opinion email scanning is more of a marketing tool than anything
else, because the real-time scanning will catch any infected email as soon
as it is executed or saved to disk. Outgoing email scanning is meaningful
only on computers that are already infected where the worm starts
propagating by sending out email. However, if the real-time scanner is
working properly, you shouldn't be infected in the first place.

the plugin for the bat is loaded but i also use the personal server
scanner. the settings i mentioned are in the personal email scanner.

basically all the personal scanner is is a middle point between you
and the email server. all it does is forward what you send to it to
the real email server.

using unauthorised and authorised should be exactly the same in the
email scanner settings.

For 3 weeks now, I tested the AVG 7 outgoing email scanner functionality. I
lost my important outgoing email before when using AVG, so I want to know
what is exactly the problem. BTW, I am talking about personal email scanner
here.

I have couple of email servers to test, sendmail on linux, Hamster on
WinXP, and ProxyPlus on WinXP. I also has a custom build email client,
and I can select which authentication is to use. Here is what I get so far:

1. AVG will accept whatever authentication you use in email client. This
makes sense because AVG actually doesn't know your authentication login and
password.

2. When AVG delivers the email to the server, if the server accepts DIGEST-
MD5 auth, it will use this, although when you send the email from email
client you didn't use this one. Result, the email fails.

3. When the email server is on your local network, AVG will not use auth.
Email fails if the server is setup to also needs auth from local network.

4. It works if the email server doesn't support DIGEST-MD5 auth. I tested
it works with PLAIN, LOGIN, and CRAM-MD5.

5. When AVG fails to delivers email to server (because of bad
authentication), no error is reported to user. You just lost your email.
You can check the AVG log to see the error if you enable it.

6. When AVG wants to deliver the email to server, and it's blocked by
firewall, the email is lost. No report to user.

I disable the outgoing scanner until the problem is solved.

Thanks, DL. I'ver realised the same thing, that outgoing emails can get
lost because when AVG fails to send it doesn't tell you (unless you look
at its log all the time). I also feel that AVG's way of interfacing with
pop servers and email clients is rather cumbersome. As a result I've
returned to AVG 6 (free) for the time being. At least it's easy to
comprehend!
