Best in terms of detection rates include McAfee, Kaspersky (KAV) and
products that use the KAV scan engine such as F-Secure. Download a
trial version of KAV version 3.5 from:

http://www.avp.ch

if you want to try a really nice unbloated "down to earth" and
excellent scanner.

If you want a free one then choose between AVG ,Avast ,Antivir, as these
three are the main one that work on most windows platforms. If you want to
pay for an AV then the advice given by (e-mail address removed) is the way to go.By
the way just because AVG cant move a file to the vault doent mean it isnt
performing correctly. The file in question could be contained in your system
restore ,in which case no other AV will remove it either under normal
circumstances. You have to disable the system restore to remove any virus
contained there.

One often asked in here. A lot depends on how you intend to use
it.
its the same old story 6 months down the line a virus comes along that
destroys

Then you will probably want one that automatically updates frequently.
Most of the 'same old story' stories revolve around worms that come
to you, before the ability of your AV to detect them does (sometimes
referred to as the 'day zero' effect).
is so if you would be kind enough to give me some tips on witch one

I'm sure many will offer their best guess to you, but it is something
that you must decide based on what you need.

E-mail scanning (what kind?)? Scanning downloads? Do you
regularly update your software, or do you need an anti-virus
to help you to get away with not applying security updates?
im currently running
avg free edition but it just says file couldn't be removed to vault and I

Well, at least it detected and identified which is its basic function.

Everything else is fluff....

Whatever AV you choose because of the detection rating, most of which
depends on which rating site you choose to believe, don't make your decision
based upon e-mail scanning capabilities, as it really affords you no
additional protection at all, and can cause various problems when activated.
If you really want good e-mail protection, get Mailwasher, or some other
program that takes care of e-mail at the server level before it gets to your
machine.

I have used AVG6 Free for over 2 years now, and had both Norton and McAfee
before. I got several viruses with both Norton and McAfee, but, 2 years
and counting with AVG6 Free, I have not had one virus yet. I have not tried
Avast, but, some of my other AV newsgroup and forum friends also say it is
good, and it's free.
But, I will stay with AVG6 Free until I have a reason not to. :-)
