Am I the only one not able to connect and update virus def. I use the free
edition. Is it because I am cheap?

I dont think so, from reading this newsgroup it makes me wonder how AVG are
still in business as everyone seems to have some gripe about their update
service.

Is there ANYONE out there whos pc updates without any fuss?

Dave :(

Still in business? How exactly are they making money on the free edition?

You can happily upgrade if you know how to tweak it a little bit.

Si.

I am having the same problem, but only from a... well not sure, a month
probably.

What's the tweak? I don't understand.

Grisoft went worldwide after serving ONLY Europe for some time. Because of
this their servers have been overloaded.

Just keep trying.

Ray.

the tweak is to replace the file that tells it to go to the slow, barely
functioning, Czech server for an update and replace it with one that goes
fetch from the shiny bright US servers that the paying customers use.

You can download it from

www.ka25.ndo.co.uk/av.htm

where you will also find instructions.

Otherwise download the free 'home' edition of avast (www.avast.com )

and experience a far more efficient product. I had avast running under test
on one of my machines and am now in the process of switching them all over.
It found things that AVG had missed completely and updates itself with no
hassle at all

Do you help them in staying in business?

No problem updating - even free - if you follow earlier suggestion on this
newsgroup.

Damn, there goes the neighbourhood ;-)

Try uninstalling, reboot as requested, downloading the
lastest version from the website www.grisoft.com and
reinstalling the lastest version - Worked for me!!

Yes, mine. (With the appropriate changes to url.ini to allow it to access
the grisoft.com server).

Here is the simple fix posted by Rheem in this newsgroup.

gram
Multiple AVG6 Virsus Update Sites - Navigate to your AVG install
directory and rename your existing url.ini file to url.iniold.
Copy the following and paste into notepad and save it as url.ini.
Put this new file into your AVG install directory. You'll now have 3
options to select from with www.grisoft.com being the default.

[SERVER_NAME]
1=free.grisoft.cz
2=ftp.grisoft.com
3=www.grisoft.com

[SERVER_URL]

2=ftp.grisoft.com/pub/softw/60/fe/
3=http://www.grisoft.com/softw/60/fe/
