I know it's early days, but having managed to get AVG Free to work with build
5600 and 5728, I NOW can't get it working in RC2 5744. Anyone have any
experience on this one yet? I've tried the usual XP comp. and admin. modes
etc. Thanks. Haven't yet tried AVG 7.5 however, but I gather that's not a
freebie!

I have the same issue, only I never got it to work in 5728.
I ''run as administrator'' when installing, am using the latest
version of AVG Free (avg71free_407a808) and get the
following message:

Local machine: installation failed
Installation:
Error: Action failed for file avgmfrs.sys: starting service....
This driver has been blocked from loading (1275)

Driver blocked due to incompatibility

I am using the same version as you and I get exactly the same error message!
However, strangely, I DID have it working under 5728! That doesn't make a
lot of sense to me... I guess hardware/software combinations can effect the
outcome in different scenarios!

Mike

I was hoping to find AVG worked with RC2 :( I have just installed RC2 but
now don't know which AV will work. I have a licence for AVG Pro has anyone
had a successful install with 7.5 Pro?

I tried 7.5 pro "trial" and in fact have it running right now, so yes it
works! As I said in the previous post; has it something to do with
hardware/software combinations? Does anyone know if that IS the case, or
indeed what the heck is going on! Why can I run it and not "pippin" and yet
"bchat" can't run AVG free and I can with the same build! Curiouser and
curiouser!
Mike

I am going to install Pro on RC2 soon - I have only just installed RC2 with
office doing a defrag and checked to see if AVG would work this time - had
problems last twice. Hopefully I can post back to say it worked for me
although it did before until I booted from cold and then AVG couldn't access
database error (UAC or Defender blocked something) I could load it after
booting but had this error unless I disabled UAC :( It may be that I have AVG
on first disc with XP

avg 7.5 pro works fine with rc2. i installed it in 5728 and did upgrade to
rc2. the free version kept losing the resident module or something like
that. lets see what happens after free trial ends

Installed Pro version making sure to run as admin etc no problem installed
re-booted (without UAC) everything was working - enabled UAC rebooted same as
last time could not load dat but I can launch AVG when booted and everything
is there and working. I think I will keep this now as I can work with AVG
better than Trend - at least I have my right click scan file back again.

Would love to know how to fix the error but from Beta2 even working with AVG
techs we could not get this bug fixed - it might be the fact I am on dual
boot. The new 7.5 Interface is better just don't like the error produced when
UAC is enabled. No choice with this as I need both.

I dual boot - Vista RC2 and XP Home SP2 - separate hard drives.
AVG Free is fine with XP - have used it for years.
I have Avast 4.7 Home working in RC2.
I like AVG better - for no particular reason.
As mentioned in other posts -
software/hardware combinations play into the scenario somehow.

I now have AVG free running in RC2! Like you, BChat: I turned UAC off,
installed it and then turned it back on and all is fine!
Also, like you, I prefer AVG; have used it for ever within XP Pro; I also
dual boot with Vista and XP Pro (same hard drive, 2 partitions)
I tried Avast 4.7... worked OK but I just don't like it! Can't put my
finger on why!

Mike

Further more, why does UAC prevent me from installing AVG! Surely the idea
is to give the USER the option to allow or not (think of what UAC stands
for!). In this case, it is NOT giving ME control, but taking over!

Mike

Mike,
I still can't get AVG to work in RC2 - darn darn darn
I turned UAC off weeks ago - free at last - free at last

I finally got AVG to run seamlessly with RC2 after struggling to get it
running smoothly since first installing it on beta 2 and everything in
between. I've had no problems installing but loading at startup was not
working.

I loaded RC2, then right-clicked on the AVG free exe file and selected "run
in XPsp2 compatibility" mode, right-clicked and "run as administrator".
After it was fully installed and updated, I still got a kernel interface
error at startup. I was able to manually load the resident after boot-up was
done.

I decided that windows firewall must be doing something to prevent AVG from
doing what it needed to do. I went to Windows Firewall and clicked on "allow
a program to access the internet". Then I clicked on "add program" and
browsed to program files>grisoft>avgfree>avgcc.exe. I can't believe it.
It's running smoothly even with UAC, Windows Defender, and Windows Firewall.
Unbelievable. This is the free version, not the beta that they have for
Vista.

Well, there you go! BChat, try that!
I have AVG Free running perfectly. Strangely though AVG is not even listed
in the firewall exceptions! Defender and UAC are both on and not causing any
problems! To re-iterate, all I did was turn UAC off, install AVG under
XPProSP2 comp. and run as administrator. No errors at all during set-up and
once loaded and rebooted, switched UAC back on and it did not complain once!
Go figure, as I believe my friends and family in the US would say!

Mike

This is great news & I will try this as soon as I boot Vista computer today,
hopefully it will work for me as otherwise AVG installed properly using the
UAC disable method. I have UAC on again and selected 'not to show error'
withint the .dat component before shutting down last night but would much
prefer the firewall access way of booting without the error.

Hopefully I can post later with my issue solved running AVG 7.5 Pro (not the
beta one for Vista) When I tried Avast with beta2 it worked fine BUT caused a
long boot for me plus I am more familiar with AVG than the way Avast works.
Preference would be NOD32 which I do run on my main computer.

The new interface AVG has now is a lot better I just hope the error on boot
will vanish and then my install is fine :) thank you.

Oops yes. Forgot to mention the properties box to get compatibility mode.

When I installed AVG, I had all security turned on. When I looked at
windows firewall, there were 4 entries for AVG already in there but not the
avgcc.exe. I remember adding that in XP so decided to try in Vista. That
step is what finally gave no errors on running AVG.

I checked my firewall logs and had 3 entries for AVG avgamsvr.exe + avgcc.exe
+ avginet.exe all were there for me but I still have the error on booting
about the kernel database. I did use XP xp compat etc but AVG still will not
work without the error - I have contacted tech support and submitted the
files to them hoping to fix this.

This adventure can sure be flaky. On this pc, which is another install of
RC2, I didn't have to do anything extra. Avgcc.exe was already added in the
firewall along with avgamsvr.exe, avgemc.exe, and avginet.exe.

And on this pc, Thunderbird installed easily but won't on the RC1. I keep
getting error 87 and install freezes. Flaaaaaky.
