I downloaded this new version (I've been using 6) and it's been giving me
nothing but problems. I finally got it uninstalled but am now looking for
another free anti-virus program. I use Windows XP. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Payton

I downloaded AVG7.0 and my machine will no longer automatically hibernate.
It seems to be permanently active.
I cannot discuss this with AVG's discussion group because you have to
register to do that, and it won't let me register! Whatever password it
gives me is not accepted.
emails to sales get me banal off-topic remarks.
So I guess I''ll try Avast.

That's one of the things that happened to me too. So I finally bit the
bullet and bought the ZoneAlarm anti-virus/firewall program. It seems to be
working great. I suppose you get what you pay for.

Do you mean the AVG Forum wont let you register? That sounds like a website
problem - try emailing the webmaster about it rather than sales.

However, after battling AVG7 for a while I have now dumped it and gone to
Avast, just like numerous other AVG users. If they were trying to reduce
the number of Free Edition being used, seems they have achieved their goal!!

What kind of problems are numerous people having? I'm using AVG7 on my XP
and ME systems without issue.

Well, most problems seem to revolve around the new e-mail scanner. For
example, I'm running XP Pro SP2 and OE, AVG6 functioned great - almost
invisible until it detected a virus! But AVG7 with the new email scanner
interface works fine with small email messages, but when it came to larger
ones with pics, etc, attached it was ridiculously slow. I sat there for a
minute watching the AVG scanner and it was up to 1.9%, but when I disabled
it (or went back to AVG6 or Avast or AntiVir) it fully loaded in less than a
minute.... I also have 2 x 98SE machines that suffer similar problems.

Add to that the new user interface - not disastrous for many I guess but in
some ways not as easy to navigate and set up as AVG6 was (well, my view
anyway based on what I've read from others). I don't particularly like some
of the changes they made - where I use to be able to change the schedule
easily from the main window now I had to go searching for the settings (at
first)... rather minor stuff I agree, if that was the only issue with it....

Also seems many people are having trouble installing it or getting it to
work properly at all, especially the email scanner bit, and lets face it I
can live without scanning outgoing mail but I really like scanning incoming
stuff! AVG6 did that just fine, as does Avast, but AVG7 can be a real pain
in the neck....

As with any software though, some people will have absolutely no problems
whatsoever - but looking at the AVG forum and various newsgroups, there are
far too many people complaining about very similar problems for this to be
just a few people doing the wrong thing... Obviously there are some issues
with AVG7 - maybe it depends on what other software you have (Grisoft seem
to claim that some firewalls are incompatible with AVG7.....) but in the end
it still means a lot of AVG users changing to other AV software..

Cheers

I'm still wrestling with a variety of configurations to find out why the
email scanner occasionally says 'not fully functional' exactly 5 mins after
logging on. Am checking different configs of Windows Firewall/Security
Centre, ZA Pro and AVG to get it to stop happening. No one change I make
ever seems to make the fault go away completely or appear consistently.

Another thing that is happening is that occasionally, when logging on, the
whole shabang just locks up. If the logon does work you are left with just
your wallpaper and no icons. The only way out is the reset button - the 3
finger salute doesn't have any effect.

Other than that it seems fine!!!

See ya,

regularly used accounts -son/wife/self).

I recently installed AVG7 on my PII/400 MHz laptop running XP/pro/sp2.
The only time I saw the msg about the email scanner not being fully
functional was when I had disabled file and printer sharing. IIRC, once
I enable F&P sharing, the systray icon went back to color (from black
and white) and that msg went away.

I also use OE for my email client and haven't experienced problems with
the email scanning of AVG7.

I run ZAF and the Windows security center and firewall are disabled.

Avast is pretty good, but even more of a pain to configure for folks not
able to deal with configuring AVG...
