John...

Hi,I have been having the same update problems with
AVG7FREE as everyone else.I found a site that lets
you search for IP adresess,so I searched for AVG's
servers.Using the information found I modified my hosts
file with the following:

193.86.103.19 guru.grisoft.com

193.86.3.36 free.grisoft.com

193.86.3.37 free.grisoft.com

193.86.3.38 free.grisoft.com

193.86.103.14 ftp.grisoft.com

Rebooted my pc and the next update was faster than before.
The site I used is:

Where is this hosts file located?

I've tried the method suggested.
Seems to work well - but since it's less then a day - don't quote me on the
result.
I've just created a file called HOST (no file extension) and just dumped it
under windows/application data/avg7/.
I then copied the IPs into the file and saved it.
I'm running Win98SE.

Again, seems okay - touch wood.

Regards,

Ka.

The filename is plural, must be named: HOSTS
and nothing will happen if you put it where you say you did.

Should be in c:\windows
Again, seems okay - touch wood.

Seems. But it's not doing anything for you. <g>

Yar, found the Hosts file but all entries have the same IP address (local
host?).
Will it work if I add different IP addresses? WinXP SP2.

I have Win2K Pro. When I save the edited version of the hosts file with the
new lines in it, it saves it as a text file in the
WINNT/Systems32/Drivers/etc directory.

What I end up with are the original hosts file (generic type, same as I
started with) and the additional hosts.txt file that contains everything the
original did plus my added lines. Is this this correct?

193.86.103.19 guru.grisoft.com

is the only HOSTS entry redirect you need to add to your hosts file to fix
the AVG7 update problem - all the others are superfluous. With this your
scheduled update feature will also now work seamlessly.

127.0.0.1 is "localhost" ( your own computer ) ; i.e. it directs "bad sites"
back without connecting. My HOSTS file now has over 33,000 entries
redirecting to 127.0.0.1 - it's a combo of MVPS , HPGURU, and my own
entries edited with "Hostess".

Works pretty much instantaneously in combo with eDexter and my own custom
image .gif files - ( I used PSP to build some "white X in a black square"
gifs ) on a PIII 600MHz Win98SE.

Once you've tried HOSTS, you'll never go back ! 8^]

HOSTS. No .txt , no mas - Just HOSTS w/o a file type.

It doesn't work for me on Win98SE.

My c:\windows\hosts (I presume it's not case sensitive) file contains just
the two lines

193.86.103.19 guru.grisoft.com
127.0.0.1 localhost

What am I doing wrong?

127.0.0.1 localhost

MUST MUST MUST BE :

the first line in the file 8^]

try it !

How do I save that file as the updated hosts file with no extension? In
other words, since, after you save it with the added lines, windows seems to
demand some type of "save as" type? Where do you go from there?

Note where it's saved. Then use My Computer or Windows Explorer to
navigate to the folder and file. Right click the file and choose "rename".
Rename it hosts with no extension.

Oh yeah, I did get the file name right - just shoved it into the wrong
folder.
Thanks for the tip though.

Have a nice one.

Still doesn't work.

Control Panel/Network/Primary Network Logon is "Windows Family Logon". Is
that correct?
