Does anyone know why AVG's server no longer offers updates for their version
6 free anti-virus software. Have been trying to update for weeks now.

This has been around for a long time.

(1) Check your AVG folder (default at C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG6)
for a file named URL.INI with following content. Double click on it to
open it up usually in Notepad.

[SERVER_NAME]
1=free.grisoft.cz

[SERVER_URL]
1=http://free.grisoft.cz/softw/60/fe
Actual URL=1

(2) Change it to :

Copy the below info into the URL.ini file overwriting everything in
there Then save the file & update AVG until this server is as busy as
the original, but you'll have 2 to choose from the AVG Update menu:

[SERVER_NAME]
1=free.grisoft.cz
2=ftp.grisoft.com
3=www.grisoft.com

[SERVER_URL]
1=http://free.grisoft.cz/softw/60/fe
2=ftp.grisoft.com/pub/softw/60/fe/
3=http://www.grisoft.com/softw/60/fe/
Actual URL=2

There have been problems with AVG (look through this newsgroup for related
threads, there's lots).

You should go to the AVG homepage at www.Grisoft.com and download the
updates direct from their site.

Hope this helps.

After you've done that, & I haven't used AVG in a few months so I'm a
bit rusty, but there is a server drop down tab, I think in your update
window. Start with 1 of them & work your way down until it updates.
It'll also depend on the time of the day as off peak hours would be the
best time to run the update, for example 3:24 pm or am would probably be
the slowest time. Where 8:30 - 10:00 am & 5 - 8:00 pm are probably their
busiest times. It does work if the below is the only thing in the
url.ini file. Do a search on avg update in these archives or on gGoogle
as I thought there was a 4th server, but I could be wrong. But I've
setup at least 10 pc's myself using that & worked good. now I'm setting
people up with Avast, but Avast is a bit trickier, but definitely IMHO
is a superior product.

I've tried that and it doesn't work.

ditto!!!!!!!!!

The new URL.ini file worked OK for awhile, but no longer works for me. I get
messages such as:

"An automatic connection to the Internet could not be established. Please
manually establish a connection to download your Update files (this can
typically be done by launching your Internet browser)."

So that looks like some internal connection problem with the software that's
making it incompatible with their new server code, or some such. Thus the
problem involves more than just busy servers...

Nope,

If the server is just **too** busy, then there are a number of messages that
AVG will return - occasionally you'll get this one.

I'll take your word for it. You sound like you know what you're talking
about. However in effect the AVG software is defunct if the virus
definitions can't be updated on demand. I think I'll go buy Norton's
anti-virus and quit fooling around with amateur software productions like
AVG. I don't have a lifetime to devote to it!

Just work your way down the list of servers.
I got it from the Akmai server this morning.

Tried grisoft.com shortly after posting with no joy - couldn't connect -
immediately tried .cz and was fine if a little slow.

I tried all of the download links and none would work for several hours.
Like you, I finally got it from .cz a few minutes ago.
I wanted to set it up for automatic daily download, and then forget about
it, but these problems make that nearly impossible.

I'll agree with you on that point.

....but your "Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free" so I guess
update frequency doesn't matter much after all. ;o)

I had the same problem. Then I tried to download after 10:00PM. Got it
